Description

Pressure gauges are among the most common pressure measurement devices worldwide. The principle of the "Bourdon tube", developed by Eugène Bourdon in 1849, has a predominant role in the development of this technology.

Bourdon offers mechanical pressure gauges for accurate measuring of relative, absolute and differential pressure covering measuring ranges from 0…6 mbar to 0…1600 bar and compatible with almost every application.

Mechanical pressure gauges are local indicators without external power supply. The indication is generated by the elastic deformation of a mechanical sensing element when pressurized. Different types of sensing elements allow solutions for nearly every kind of application. Many options can be selected to adapt the pressure gauge to specific process or application requirements e.g. medium compatibility, overpressure protection, safety, specific dials etc. Proven technologies, many years of experience, modern production methods and a certified quality management system guarantee excellent measurement results even under extreme operating conditions.

Technology

Bourdon provides various pressure measuring technologies on mechanical instruments.

Along with the Original Bourdon tube pressure gauge, we manufacture capsule sensing elements for low pressure application as well as diaphragm and bellow pressure gauges for specific process requirements.

How does a Bourdon tube pressure gauge work?

The functional principle of the Original Bourdon tube is based on a C-shaped bent tube. For high pressure ranges helical tubes are used. A bent tube tends to straighten and regain its circular form in cross-section when pressurized. This change in cross-section is nearly imperceptible and the straightening leads to a deflection at the end of the tube of only a few millimeters. The deformation is in the elastic range of the material. The design of the tubes and the production process are made to gain the best possible repeatability and the lowest hysteresis when the tubes are pressurized. This is the basis for a high accuracy of the pressure gauges.

The end part of the tube is linked to a movement, which transfers the linear deflection into the pointer rotation allowing the visualization of the pressure applied.

Today, original Bourdon products, firmly founded on the brand´s history and 170 years of technological development, can be purchased only from Bourdon, which is part of the Baumer Group.
